The question we hear most: is a carport enough, or do I need a garage? It comes down to what you are protecting, your budget, and how much you want to use the space.
What each one does
A carport is a steel roof on legs: it blocks sun, rain, hail and leaves. A garage is the same steel frame with closed walls, roll-up doors, a walk-in door and windows: it also keeps out wind, dust, prying eyes and the full weather.
Price
A carport is the most affordable option per square foot because it has no wall panels or doors. Closing in a carport adds walls and openings, and the price moves toward a garage. As a reference, a two-car carport and a two-car garage of the same size start from the same base structure; the difference is the walls, doors and windows.
When a carport is the right call
- Daily drivers that come and go several times a day.
- Boats, trailers and tractors that only need shade and a roof.
- A tight budget today, with the option to close it in later.
- Properties where permitting an open structure is simpler.
When you want a garage
- Classic cars, motorcycles and tools that need to be locked up.
- A workshop, gym or hobby space you use year-round.
- Inventory or materials that cannot get wet or dusty.
- Properties where the building should look like part of the house.
The middle ground
Many customers choose a carport with one closed end or half walls: it cuts wind and blowing rain without the cost of a full garage. You can also start open and close it in later; our buildings are designed for that.
Decide in five minutes
- Does it need a lock? Garage.
- Just shade and a roof? Carport.
- Strong wind or snow? Consider at least one closed end and a vertical roof.
